What
is Yellow Pages?A publication that provides the
name, address and telephone number alphabetically listed under types of
business or service headings.
Advertising in Yellow Pages
Some people believe that yellow pages do not receive response like
other advertising methods do and this is true to some extent but not in
totality. When talking about traditional yellow pages, there sure is a
decline in number of people opting for advertising in it. According to
a recent report, even the most attractive advertisement in a particular
section is not getting the response from callers like they used to get
before. On the contrary, the prices of placing ads in directories are
on a rise, which speaks a different, story altogether.
In reality different categories are witnessing different rates of
decline. Like the lawyers category is seeing the maximum decline, where
as emergency service provider’s section has the same call
rate.
And sections like mobile phones, real estate and furniture are seeing a
rise due to the increasing customer demand. Altering the size of the
advertisement or changing the look cannot do wonders any more.
Experts suggest that relying on yellow pages to get customers
isn’t enough. Other options should be considered as well
along
with it. With the Internet reaching every home, nearly half of the
Internet users use the net everyday. They prefer to buy stuff online,
from the comfort of their homes. Research should be done on the
Internet to get reviews about the product. People, who don’t
usually shop online, also are also opting to shop online as information
is provided at the click of a mouse. It is easier for people to trust
as customers who used the product give their feedback about the product
after using it.
A relatively newer concept is the yellow pages going online. The good
thing about them is that they are updated frequently unlike the printed
directories and can be viewed from any part of the world. According to
researches conducted, the response increased by twenty five percent
every year. So those who are interested to invest in yellow pages
advertising can think of going online. Directories are
submitted
to search engines, which on typing a keyword or phrase bring the
results. Small and local businesses, too, can land on the pages brought
by the result. The cost of creating a website can be saved if all the
relevant information about the company is included in the online yellow
pages. Look out for the date to renew the directory listing, and if
there is a need to change the advertisement, it is not a big problem on
online yellow pages. Some starter websites offer to place advertisement
in their yellow pages for free. Search out for such websites on the
Internet.
Larger businesses can start their own websites and place links in the
online yellow pages. Articles can be framed about the business and can
be submitted to Ezines and websites related to the area of business.
Some websites also allow posting articles for free. The purpose of the
yellow pages is basically to get potential customers but that
doesn’t mean that existing customers should be neglected.
Steps
should be taken to strengthen the relationship with them and to retain
their trust by maintaining the standard of the products supplied to
them. Once they are completely satisfied, the price-rise
won’t
bother them and they will talk about the company to people they know,
which will fetch new customers.
The objective is to work smartly and select the right method of
advertising. If a business isn’t using any other method for
advertising apart from using yellow pages, it can cause problems and
the products may not sell. Analyze how much money is spent on placing
ads in directories and estimate whether the amount of customers the
business gets is desirable. Whenever a call is received from a
potential customer, ask them how they got to know about the enterprise.
This will help to analyze which advertising method is ideal for the
business. It is never late to correct the mistake and go for the right
method.

Yellow Pages
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Yellow
Pages refers to a telephone directory of
businesses, categorized according to the product or service provided.
As the name suggests, such directories were originally printed on
yellow paper, as opposed to white pages for non-commercial listings.
The traditional term Yellow Pages is now also
applied to online directories of businesses.
The name and
concept of "Yellow Pages" came about in 1883, when a printer in
Cheyenne, Wyoming working on a regular telephone directory ran out of
white paper and used yellow paper instead. In 1886 Reuben H. Donnelley created
the first official yellow pages directory, inventing an industry.
Today, the
expression Yellow Pages is used globally, in both
English-speaking and non-English speaking countries. In the United
States, it refers to the category, while in some other countries it is
a registered name and therefore a proper noun. The term YellowPages
is not a registered name within the United States and is freely used by
many companies.
In the Republic
of Ireland, Belgium, The
Netherlands, Romania and Israel the 'Yellow Pages' are
known as the Golden Pages.
In Sri Lanka
the 'Yellow Pages' are known as the Rainbow Pages, or the silver page
In
general
A particular
Yellow Pages (YP) is a print directory which provides an alphabetical
listing of businesses within a specific geographical area (e.g.,
Greater Chicago), which are segregated under headings for similar types
of businesses (e.g., Plumbers). Traditionally these directories have
been published by the local phone company, but due to the highly
profitable nature of the business there are numerous independent
directory publishers. Some YP publishers focus on a particular
demographic (e.g., Christian Yellow Pages or Business Pages).
Yellow Pages
directories are usually published annually, and distributed for free to
all residences and businesses within a given coverage area. The
majority of listings are plain and in small black text, usually in the
Bell Gothic or Bell Centennial typefaces. The YP publishers generate
profit by selling advertising space or listings under each heading.
Advertising may be sold by a direct sales force or by approved agencies
(CMR's). Available advertising space varies among publishers and ranges
from bold names up to four color twin page ads ("double trucks").
Advertising rates typically increase every year regardless of
distribution or usage fluctuations.
In the United
States, the predominant yellow pages are the Dex
One Corporation's DEX, the AT&T
Real Yellow Pages, Yellowbook, and the Verizon Superpages.
Yellowbook
Logo used in the United States. Note the resemblance to the "Walking
Fingers" logo.
Business
listings used for publication are obtained by several methods. Local
phone companies that publish YP directories rely on their own customer
lists and include business listings that are provided by phone service
providers (ILEC's). Business owners that utilize phone services other
than the local phone company (typically a Bell Company) should make
certain that their information has been sent to the publisher for
printing in upcoming directories.
Advertising in
YP directories requires payment in full prior to printing or may be
billed monthly over the life of the contract, which is usually 12
months. Typically, a sales representative will assist the customer in
creating their ad design and provides a Proof Copy for review and
approval. Advertisers should be aware that many contracts have
automatic renewal clauses and require action on the part of the
advertiser to end future billing.
Yellow Pages
print usage is reported to be declining with both advertisers and
shoppers increasingly turning to Internet search engines and online
directories. According to a study by Knowledge Networks/SRI, in 2007,
print Yellow Pages were referenced 13.4 billion times, while Internet
Yellow Pages references increased to 3.8 billion, up from
2006’s 3.3 billion online searches.
As a result most YP publishers have attempted to create online versions
of their print directories. These online versions are referred to as
IYP or Internet Yellow Pages. Independent ad agencies or Internet
marketing consultants can assist business owners in determining sound
opportunities for YP advertising and provide objective information on
usage, possession and preferences.

Yellow Pages
has updated it's logo in March 2010. In some countries, the familiar
"walking fingers" logo is not protected as a trademark and may be used
by anyone. This logo is used in varying forms by almost every YP
publisher; however, there are companies that use it to imitate
mainstream publishers. In Israel and the Republic of Ireland, the
directory, although using the Yellow Pages logo, is called "Golden
Pages".
Internet Yellow Pages
Online Yellow
Pages are known as IYP or Internet Yellow Pages. On a broader scale
they are known as vertical directories. There are consumer oriented and
business oriented varieties. All providers of IYP offer online
advertising.
IYP offers
listings differently than standard search engines. Where search engines
return results based on relevancy to the true search term, IYP returns
results based on a geographic area.
Studies by
independent companies such as Nielson and comScore have shown that
Internet Yellow Pages have a very slim percentage of total Internet
searches. The majority, over 85% of all Internet searches, occur on the
major search engines Google, Yahoo and Bing, though directed to the
consumer seeking the business rather than searches.
Advertising on
IYP is typically available with numerous a la carte
choices. These choices become small "individual sales presentations"
which makes it easier for sales reps to sell large advertising packages.
The new version
of IYP is classified as a local search directory which provides content
with the added ability to refine the search to find the needed service.
The new search engine now prioritizes local businesses in its results
rather than the results being dominated by regional or national
companies. All services offer paid advertising options which typically
offer preferred placement on search results pages.

Will an Online Yellow Pages Directory Ad Really Work for My Small
Business?
If you own a
small
business, then you know the difficulties of bringing new customers into
your store. Combine that with the stress of trying to build and market
a website as part of your overall markeing plan, and you can see why so
many small business owners turn to the "easy" solution of just buying
an ad in an online yellow pages directory. The question is, is your
target audience reading the ad?
According to
one study
conducted by WebVisible, in partnership with Nielsen Online, 92% of
Internet users have researced products or services online, before
ultimately buying from a local business. With those kind of numbers,
it's easy to see that you want your business featured front and center
when your customer goes searching.
But there's
a problem.
According to that same study, while 66% of searchers find the
information they're looking for, 39% have trouble finding specific
businesses, even when they know those businesses exist.
The culprit
seems to be
inadequate representation on the web by small businesses. No surprise
there, since only 44% of small businesses even have a website for their
customers to find.
Internet
Yellow Pages Bridge the Gap
Imagine your
ideal
customer. She's surfing the Internet, researching that new laptop she
wants to buy. She knows the size of the hard drive, how much RAM is on
board, and what software comes pre-installed. She's ready to buy.
She's
probably driven
past your computer store a thousand times, and she's heard good things
about your service and pricing from her friends. It's 5:30. She wonders
if you're still open. She reaches for the phone to call, and realizes
she can't remember the name of your store. She Googles you, but no
luck. She turns to the yellow page directory. Does she find you, or
Best Big Box store instead?
Online
Yellow Page Directory Advertising is a Viable Way to be Found on the
Internet
Consumers
are used to
turning to the yellow pages to find a local business. After all,
they've been doing it since Reuben H. Donnelley printed the first
yellow pages directory in 1886. Today, 10% of consumers turn to
Internet yellow page directories over any other source, and 50% turn to
search engines first. Your business' listing in an online yellow page
directory will capture both those searches, without even having to
worry about optimizing your own site for search engines.
Good online
yellow page
directories put all the work into building their site to ensure
placement at the top of the search engine rankings. They make sure
their site is properly structured, that keywords are used effectively,
and they spend the money on pay per click and other advertising
campaigns
, so small
business owners don't have to.

Google

very quick and costly way which can give you quick result. It also
refers to a Ppc or paid advertising on Google or you can use any other
search engine like yahoo, msn and ask.
PPC: Pay per
click, in
which you need to pay for every click to your website from search
engine to your site .As I said this is very costly and quick way to
promote your business on internet. You can go to google.com/adwords and
can start your own campaign on Google . For yahoo you can go to
listings.local.yahoo.com and create your account. For Msn you can use
microsoft.com/SMALLBUSINESS/hub.mspx and create your account.
How Google
Adwords will
be help full to you..? PPC ads shown on top of search result as
sponsored listing So suppose I am selling weight loss products and if
someone type "weight loss Products" then my websites appear first in
Google result so this way it increase your revenues. So you need to be
little expert in this and should have good market knowledge of your
products.
So if you

and want to become a king for particular products then Google Adwords
is ultimate way for your success.
SEO OR
Search Engine
Optimization:- This is totally opposite to Google Adwords and means
natural or organic search result. It refers to the collection of
activities that you should be carried out in systematic and genuine way
to increase the visibility of your website in organic search result. As
I said this is opposite to Google Adwords and it is little slower means
you need to be patient to get result. You can hire any SEO Expert or
should know about it to do on your own.
Affiliate
Marketing: This
is very common and very famous way to generate more revenue. You can
setup affiliate program for your site and can pay users for certain
traffic or some percentage of sells to them .Now days you can easily
get third party software or application for easy tracking and monitor
of you affiliate program. So it is not that much costly now a days. The
advantage of it is you need to pay only for certain sell or performance
and so it is more convenient way than anything.
Advertise on
other
website:- Since this is not a new thing .I mean we know if we will
advertise on other website then we would indirectly get that websites
traffic too, here we are going to know on which websites we should
advertise. Google Adsense: - If you are already using Google Adwords
then This is goggle' second service which allows you to put your flash
banners and text links directly and easy way.
Advertise On
Yellow
Pages:- As we all know yellow page is business directory. Which gives
you paid and free listing and you can get really god traffic to your
website and gradually increase your revenue. We all know the success of
yelp as yellow pages.
Advertise On
Forum: 25
percent result in Google comes from forum .So forums sites have really
important role in internet marketing. In this you can choose relevant
forum according to product and can contact forum owner for advertising
.So by using forum you can target good traffic and increase visitor who
is really interested in your products and advertising on forums is
little cheap comparisons other sites.. Advertise On Someone's personal
blog:- It is very cheap way for internet marketing .If you find any
blog with good traffic and relevant to your products then you can
contact blog owner and put flash banners on blog which can be very
cheap and affective.
Where to
Find these
entire site? Since I wrote where to advertise and where to not. You can
find these sites manually or you can use some affiliate sites which
provides platform between merchants and affiliate where you need to
sign up as a merchant and you can really get good sites and trust
worthy program for your products.

Yellow Pages
Ads For Small Business
When most
small businesses start up they automatically think: "if I get a Yellow
Pages ad all will be well".
The
challenge is that
over the past few years the way people search for businesses has
changed. It used to be that whenever anyone wanted to find a business
they went straight to the big yellow books. Now the majority of people
will go to their computer first.
At the 2007
Microsoft
Strategic Account Summit, Bill Gates predicted that within 5 years that
no one under 50 would use the print Yellow Pages. Personally I think
that this is a bit of a stretch by a few years, but it is certainly a
trend to be aware of.
The main
strength of the
print version of the Yellow Pages is that you can find local businesses
easily and quickly. In the past 12 months Google Maps has improved
their offering to make finding a local business much easier on the net
and are starting to eat away at the local advantage Yellow Pages had.
What does
this mean for
small business? Should you turf your Yellow Pages ad? Yellow Pages are
just one part of your overall marketing strategy. You need to consider
your total marketing plan for the year to make a sensible decision
about what to do about the Yellow Pages.
In my
opinion, even
though their importance is declining, for some industries Yellow Pages
for the next few years will still be a good source of leads and
customers. So, how do you determine if the investment is a good one for
you?
Step 1:
Research
Before you
make any
decision on running a Yellow Pages ad, pick up a copy of the big yellow
books for your area and look through your category listings. If there
are only single line ads in your listing, you can pretty much bet that
Yellow Pages are a waste of time for your industry. Take a look at
Educational Consultants to give you an example of what I mean.
The sort of
categories
that still get a solid run from Yellow Pages are local services like
computer repairers (people's computers will be not working when they
are looking for a repair technician) and tradespeople If you are in a
service based industry then generally yellow pages are not as relevant.
Step 2: Look
at your own statistics
Look back
over where your
leads came from in the past year (you do ask people how they found you
don't you?) Many businesses are finding a declining trend in leads from
the Yellow Pages and an increase in the internet referrals. If you have
statistics, review them and use them to help make your decision based
on fact not gut feel.
Step 3: Look
at Return on Investment
Yellow Pages
are an
extremely expensive form of advertising. Even just the addition of your
website address can to your line listing can cost you $200. Display ads
run to the thousands of dollars. Just like any form of advertising you
need to look at your return on your investment - how much do you need
to earn to cover the cost of your ads? Are you getting sufficient sales
to cover the cost of your ads?
A number of
smaller
businesses are scaling down the size of their ads and are investing
this money back into Search Engine Optimisation or website content
rewrites by SEO copywriters to help them get better positions on search
engines like Google.
Step 4:
Display ads are better than in column ads
If all of
the numbers add
up from your research know that display ads are more effective than
column ads. They grab attention and are not lost in a series of black
lines. To choose the right display ad for your business, go back to
your initial research- go for the biggest display ad your ROI tells you
will work for your business.
Step 5: Get
your words right
Writing a
Yellow Pages ad
is an art form. If you make a mistake in your words you have to live
with the consequences for a full 12 months before you can change them.
Here are some tips to get your words right:
Your
headline is vital!
The first thing you want people to read is something to grab a reader's
attention to make them want to read more. It has to be something that
flags down their particular need or exactly what you are looking for.
Your company name is NEVER exciting, nor is a boring headline that
doesn't differentiate you from anyone else.
Here are
some headlines
from the air-conditioning section. Which ad would you read more of
"Total comfort solutions"; "Excel air-conditioning", "Brisbane's
cheapest prices"; "Climatrol air-conditioning" or "Quality Ducted and
Split Systems"?
None of
these headlines
are particularly brilliant, but the ones that come close are the ones
on price which will attract price shoppers or the one on ducted and
split systems as it tells you precisely what makes them different.
If you have
time and are
serious about getting results, then use Google Adwords to test your
headlines to get the one with maximum results before you finalise your
Yellow Pages ad.
Your body
text is also
very important. Your body text needs to be short, sharp and snappy. It
has to highlight exactly what people are looking for and address key
things people are looking for (and any problems people want to avoid).
The Ducted
ad has a line
"installation by qualified tradesman, no subcontractors". This is great
if people are worried that a sub-contractor may botch the installation.
In comparison look at "Climatrol has served SE Queensland for over 20
years". Unless business longevity is important to you, then a quick
chorus of "who cares" rings out in your head when you read this ad.
They may be in business for that long ... but are they any good?
Call to
action. You have
to make it crystal clear what you want people to do once they have read
your ad. You need a clear call to action. "Call xxxx xxxx now for an
obligation free quote", "Visit our showroom at XXXXX". Just putting in
your number will reduce your response rate.
Make the
number stand
out. If it is just included in your text you will create confusion,
this also goes for if you include a Fax number. If you must include a
fax number, keep it small and inconspicuous to reduce the number of
people dialling it by mistake.
Step 6: Get
your design right
As lovely as
the Yellow
Pages designers are, if you are serious about getting results you need
to invest in professional graphic design rather than have Yellow Pages
do it for you.
Professional
designers
get the right font, make your number very clear and readable, will not
overload the design and know what colours work when printed on yellow
pages to give the best impact.
Many photos
look blurry
when printed on yellow newspaper, so you have to get it right the first
time or your whole ad will be an expensive waste of money.
Step 7: Use
your content for other purposes
Once you
have your Yellow
Pages ad sorted, use the same content and drop it into on-line
community directories and Google Maps. Make sure your website reflects
your ad content so when people check you out on-line there is no
disconnect between what they read in your ad and what they see online.
Yellow Pages
ads are
still useful for many small businesses. If you follow these 7 steps you
will get the best possible results from your ads.
Turkey
Yellow Pages Going Yellow
The Yellow
Pages brand
has earned a large group of loyal users in the Turkish market since
arriving in Turkey in early 2008. It is felt Yellow.com.tr will more
accurately reflect Turkey Yellow Pages business operations in the
country.
This rebrand
in Turkey is
a first for our group of companies said Trevor Nadeau Regional Director
of Information & Internet Services with Al Wahda-Express Group
of
Companies, Turkey Yellow Pages’ parent company. “We
have
been in business over 20 years, operate in 5 countries and print
millions of Yellow Pages directories every year. In Turkey we are a
pure online and mobile Yellow Pages directory advertising business,
therefore it made perfect sense to make the move to just
Yellow.com.tr”.
The Yellow
Pages industry
has been around for more than 100 years and operates in more than 100
countries stated Goktug Oguz, General Sales Manager for Turkey Yellow
Pages. Even Yellow Pages Australia, a seasoned Yellow Pages market
veteran with over $2 billion dollars in revenue made the move from
using Yellow Pages to just Yellow.
The Turkish
market has a
very high penetration of Internet users and over 62 million GSM
subscriber lines. We are clearly embracing the future of Local Search
with the rebranding continued Oguz.
The move to
the shorter
more memorable URL of http://www.yellow.com.tr/ is also seen as a
strategic move to increase traffic to the already popular Yellow Pages
online and mobile destinations.
Turkey and
the world will
see the new Yellow Pages Turkey branding unveiled throughout the month
of December 2008. An online media campaign is planned along with
various radio spots, outdoor, print and direct marketing campaigns
showcasing the new look for the world’s most trust brand of
local
buying information - Yellow Pages.

Internet
Marketing vs Yellow Pages!!!
Internet
marketing should
be your first priority when looking to create a strategy for marketing
your business as opposed to a large spend in the Yellow
Pages.
Have a look at the facts and statistics about Yellow Pages directory
before you shy away from investing in search and paid
marketing
options.
To most
companies,
advertising in Yellow Pages is the unshakeable cornerstone of their
annual marketing spend and they would no more think of cancelling it
than they would hire David Brent as office manager.
Surely
Yellow Pages is
established, recognised everywhere and enjoys strong distribution. It's
expensive, but is there any alternative?
A moderately
sized
quarter of half page ad is looking at 3 -5K a year. A whole page? That
can be anything from 5K to over 8K for the year. There's no
negotiation; take it or leave it - and that's with the regulators on
their back capping and indeed cutting rates by 3.4%.
How
surprising is it that more and more of my clients are cutting back
expenditure on Yellow Pages?
Not
surprising at all
really. If you think about it, search is not new and it has played a
major part in marketing activity for decades in the form of phone books
and directories. Effective search engine marketing simply takes this a
giant step further, unlocking as is does the incredible introductory
potential the web medium provides between supplier and consumer to
connect and do business.
This trend
is reflected
in Yellow Pages own market analysis, which shows a downward trend in
client retention from 78% to 75% year on year. Interestingly, it is
newer customers who are leaving.
Yellow Pages
ads are
viewed by people who have all ready made a decision to buy. Don't
emphasise why your product or service is needed but rather why it
should be obtained from you. Consumers need and want two types of
information from Yellow Pages adverts.
Firstly,
they need to know why they should purchase from one company and not
another.
Secondly,
they need
information that facilitates making their purchase ie they need to know
how to make the purchase or have a call to action.
If you
really focus and see things through your customers eyes then your
Yellow Pages ad copy should virtually write itself.
The use of
colour and how Yellow Pages charge for it is pretty unbelievable.
The book is
now printed on white paper (think about it you can't have white ink)
Yellow Pages
charge more for white in your adverts - 40% in fact.
But, Yellow
Pages
actually have to take an extra step to print a yellow coloured ad ie
they overlay white paper with a yellow ink but this is cheaper than a
white ad.
Our surveys
show that colour is not the most important factor in selecting an
advert. In fact, it is well down the list.
Yellow Pages
sales reps often argue:
"It'll only
cost you
£800 a year to move up to the next largest ad size and ad
colour.
Don't you believe that the increased sales you'd obtain would more than
offset that expense?"
This is a
bad argument for a number of reasons....
It assumes
that the business generated by your original ad pays for itself
It assumes
that you make a 100% profit on each sale (nice work if you can get it)
It assumes
that the use
of £800 for additional Yellow Pages advertising would
generate
more business than would the use of the same £800 in another
media
Nonetheless
I see many of
my clients putting all their eggs in one "Yellow Pages" basket without
obtaining effective proof that their adverts are actually working.
The secret
is to monitor the response to each and every advert you place.
If you can't
measure it you can't manage it.
I know from
my experience
as a former Yellow Pages sales rep that one had to continually create a
false sense of urgency. Typically Yellow Pages reps only work two
directories ie they are in each area for six months at a time. The reps
are paid a commission on signed orders so it's no surprise they go in
for the kill.......

3 Things
Every Yellow Pages Advertiser Must Know
Most
business owners know
that Yellow Pages advertising has an incredible amount of potential...
but they don't know how to take full advantage of it.
Fortunately,
it's a
mystery that's solved pretty easily once an advertiser knows where to
turn for advice. There are fundamental truths about Yellow Pages
advertising that so many businesses fail to recognize... but once they
do, they find themselves "on top of" a medium with an incredible amount
of business generating power.
It's a
medium, that handled correctly, will generate new business month after
month like clockwork.
That said...
let's try to understand it a bit better, shall we?
1. Common
Yellow Pages advertising mistakes are simple to fix.
Very simple.
You don't
have to be a
graphic designer or marketing expert to drastically improve your ad
either - you just need to know your customers.
You see,
most Yellow Page
ads make the very same mistakes... year after year... directory after
directory... category after category.
Some of the
ads I see from professional design firms are riddled with the same
mistakes too... the ad only looks nicer.
That won't
cut it in the Yellow Pages.
While a
professionally
designed ad can certainly help grab attention, there is no substitute
for ad content (read: words) if your goal is to generate a phone call.
When it comes to Yellow Pages advertising, that's all that really
matters. (The Yellow Pages should have nothing to do with building your
"image".)
By learning
what makes a
good headline, good body copy, and how to develop a strong offer, your
Yellow Pages ad will run circles around an ad that just "looks great,"
but makes the same mistakes most others are making.
An example?
Using your
name and logo as the headline. It's disastrous and yet more advertisers
do it than not. No one cares what you call yourself until they've
decided to pick up the phone and actually call you.
Think about
it...
Someone
turns to the
Yellow Pages because they don't have an optometrist in mind. They don't
know who to call. Rather, they're looking to see what options are
available, and what one company offers over another.
Your company
name will never be a factor.
So if your
name and logo
is at the top of your ad... it it's big and bold and takes up space...
if it takes the place of an attention grabbing, hard-hitting
headline... you're wasting your ad's most valuable "real estate." Of
course, like most common mistakes, it's a pretty easy to fix.
You just
need to know
what makes a good headline. A good headline is something that's
impossible to miss, and engaging enough to draw the reader into the
rest of the ad.
Continuing
with the
optometrist example, look in your local Yellow Pages to see what
headlines (if any) your competitors have chosen and imagine having one
of the following at the top of your ad.
•3
Things You Need to Know Before You Call An Optometrist!
That's
attention grabbing, compelling, and nearly impossible to NOT read
further.
•"I
Was So Surprised
by How Gentle and Pleasant The Care Is At Optimal Optics. Everything is
Explained So I Feel 100% Comfortable With My Care."
An honest
testimonial
from a satisfied client is FAR more credible than your ad saying "We're
Gentle" or anything of the sort. And again, your readers will be
compelled to read more.
2. Most
Yellow Page ads are developed by the directory publisher.
That's right
- the
directory itself develops most of the ads you see. What happens if they
design your ad and 4 of your competitors' ads? Can you expect your
Yellow Page ad to receive more time and attention than another? Can you
expect it to be any better, or stand out more?
When it
comes to Yellow
Pages advertising, those that know how to set themselves apart from the
pack fare well. Differentiation is the name of the game. Good design
might look professional, but it never stops a prospect in his tracks.
Good ad copy
on the other hand, grabs attention like a magnet and doesn't let it go.
Don't just
hand the reins
to someone else and let them develop your ad for you. Learn what it
takes to generate response and play a role in developing that winning
ad for your business.
Because no
one knows what makes your customers "tick" like you do.
3. Yellow
Pages Advertising is different from just about EVERY other medium you
use.
You might
want to re-read that.
Yellow Pages
advertising is different because people see your ad when they are ready
to buy.
A newspaper
ad? That's a
distraction. People are reading to get the news. TV spots? Again,
commercials disrupt the intended activity.
The Yellow
Pages is virtually the only place people turn to read ads!
And yet,
almost every
Yellow Pages ad I see takes the approach: "This is who I am and this is
what I offer." The ad content is little more than a company name and
logo, and what I refer to as a "laundry list" of products or services
offered.
Guess what?
This is a huge mistake!
They know
what you offer.
They're looking at your ad because their eye hurts and they know a
professional should take a look at it. Focus on "why, with all of these
options, they should choose you!"
Your
prospects are a
skeptical bunch. Make contacting you and giving your business "a shot,"
a risk-free, value-filled, proposition for them. Tell them about the
policies you hold yourself to that will make their lives easier. Tell
them what you do (or how you do something) that your competitors do not
- or - that they forget to mention in their ad.
Done
correctly, this will give any business a tremendous edge over the
competition. Care to learn a little more

Yellow Pages
Advertising Tips - Three Simple Steps To Big Profits From Yellow Pages
Advertising
You want
that you may
have a nice things to come on your yellow page? Then you should keep
this three steps on your mind very clearly:
To be found,
to be Noticed, to be chosen
* 1. To be Found
As we make
as possible as
simple for our repeat, the person who will come to us will former and
nice. The man who come to us in one time will come to us the next time
also.
To Know
about your fact
of work the people. They will read your headline where they want to
know about some product or service which you provide in your web. You
will can't stop the people who are coming to your side. You
want
to gave them a nice service when they come to you.
You should
not believed
that when you will invest and will soon will get return to you. When
you will get the monthly yellow page bill record you will can pay to
expense of your business, like your house hold work.
2.To be
Noticed
If you want
to take your
page advertising to generate the next level you should put the start
attracting and nice through which the person can attract you
Page
which is looking for you. Will you thing the all type of product and
service but do not think about the fixed number through it.
Your
knowledge can show
the yellow page which you developed the ad, if you make a advertisement
5 then you have need a size, color, back ground size and also a layout
of any of illustration and a compelling headline you should notice
that ideally you have to use all elements properly
strategically
* 2. To be Chosen
You want to
get a nice
result of your yellow page then you should work hard to get profit on
your page advertising then don't stop it! You should work hard to get
it your final and most attractive step of your.
You have to
give nice compelling result to know about the right things about the
competitors. So it is very important to do.
Yellow page
are give you
a nice result. First of all you will get some phone book in any of the
country, where you will born or death over and over by using standard
photos, bulleted list of her feathers and competitors. You are thinking
of loss then you should have to find that the person who are opening
their phone book and find to business they can feel good about calling.
The
definition is that if
you have a ad which is same a others than with the help of its you will
never go up or does not stand out!
So put some
extra
ordinary reason to choose your page and they will do so. You have to
plain about the way of profit while your excuses are "no one uses the
yellow pages anymore".
Some are
thinking that
owner had no clue together a bad of yellow page ad. And some of them
will give you a nice ad. That why all of will select you to give nice
opportunity for huge your yellow pages. You want to little work hard
and you want to see the out put of your success consultant to help you.

Start Your
Own Niche Yellow Pages
The
Internet is
expanding daily, and more businesses are willing to advertise online.
This market will continue to grow and become prospers for those who
have their own directories for eager advertisers. Having a yellow pages
of your own can help you to reap the rewards of these niche
advertisers. Niche yellow pages can be the connecting point to local,
ethnic, and religious advertisers on the web. Lets consider 3 types of
niche yellow pages: local, ethnic, and religious.
Google and
Yahoo are
already tackling the local markets with their local search. Local
search is really big business. Starting a local yellow pages directory
could prove to be a great idea in this emerging market. For instance,
let's say you start a Memphis Tennessee Yellow Pages Directory. Just by
being familiar with the surrounding of this city you can make personal
contacts that will enhance advertiser relations. Google and Yahoo can't
have a hands-on- approach to the local search, although they have
billions of dollars. You can grow your yellow pages directory by
sponsoring local events, radio station promotion, and list local owned
small businesses.
Ethnic
yellow pages are a
great way to capture the spending dollars of a particular community.
Let me give an example of this. I started an African American yellow
pages to help minority owned business in local communities. This proved
once again to be a great move, and this niche yellow pages has grown
quickly. It allowed me to run minority ads and other announcements
pertaining to the African American community. You can start a woman's,
Asian, French, Arab, Jewish, or any type of ethic yellow pages that
comes to mind.
Last but not
least,
starting religious yellow pages is great idea too! You can promote it
first in your Church, Synagogue, or Mosque. I started a Christian
yellow pages to support business in churches. This yellow page has
grown and I also formed and has allowed me to form personal contacts
with other Christian webmasters and businessmen.
Remember to
research your
niche market. Do keyword research, check your business model, and do
proper seo work on your site. Choose good software. I recommend php
yellow. You can start profitable yellow pages today!
Mobile Tip:
Access Yellow Pages Egypt on Mobile
Mobile
Yellow Pages
presents structured information in a structured way. All results are
actual business listings. Easy to search, easy to find, easy to read
and easy to dial.
Mobile
Yellow Pages is in essence a website developed exclusively for mobile
phones and similar handheld devices
like
PDA’ and
Blackberry’s etc. It is specially designed to deliver
business
listings and mobile advertising in a very efficient manner. Efficient
meaning – using as little amount of bandwidth or data
transfer as
possible. With a normal website there are many graphical images and
text that should not be delivered to a mobile website. The mobile
website or Mobile Yellow Pages as we refer to it in this document is
designed to use as little an amount of bandwidth and data transfer as
possible.
The biggest
and most
obvious difference is that Mobile Yellow Pages is exclusively a Local
Search engine. Due to the limited screen sizes of mobile devices and
slower Internet connectivity speeds (GPRS/3G) in the mobile telecom
sector Mobile Yellow Pages must be very efficient in its use of
graphics, content and data. The YellowPages.com.eg website is a very
rich content site and thus works best when connected to high speed
Internet connections. The goal of Mobile Yellow Pages is to quickly
deliver the correct business listing information to the Mobile Yellow
Pages user. In most cases they will be out and about in the city and
trying to find the contact details as quickly as possible. Mobile
Yellow Pages is designed to do that.
The banners
are delivered
on Mobile Yellow Pages sequentially. This means that we will create a
list of all banners in the rotation and ensure each one gets served
equally to mobile devices. Meaning that a new mobile banner is served
(delivered to a mobile device) with every mobile user session. Take for
example the home page of Mobile Yellow Pages. There is a total of 20
Home Page Banners available. We will create a list of all banners to be
delivered – from first sold to the last one sold. From this
list
of 20 the mobile banner ad server will deliver the banner that is at
the top of the list of 20 banners. Once the system serves that banner
it goes to the bottom of the list to work its way sequentially back to
the top of the list to be served again. It is very important to
remember that the delivery of banners may not appear to be sequential
if you are refreshing or navigating the home page. The reason being is
that simultaneously in another part of Cairo or Egypt or the
world….another mobile device may have just been served the
next
in line mobile banner. Clearly the greatest opportunity to see
sequential delivery is when doing a category search on Mobile Yellow
Pages.
At the time
being it has
been decided to direct all mobile traffic to the mobile portal. The net
result will be a better user experience and easier access to business
listing information. Many of today’s mobile device browsers
do
not support applications that browsers on PC do. It is preferred that
the user have a more successful experience on an EYP online property
than a frustration one trying to view large images and navigate around
a window far too big for most mobile browsers.
Stand Apart
from the rest: Yellow Page Advertising and the Internet for Small
Businesses
A lot of
people use the
Yellow Pages when looking for information about local businesses. That
is why, one of the tried and tested small local business advertising
tips is Yellow Page Advertising. Why? When a consumer references the
Yellow Pages, it means he is ready to buy, will most likely call, and
will buy at the place stated in the Yellow Page ad.
But a new
trend is
growing that cannot be ignored: local searches in the Internet.
Computer savvy consumers go to the Internet to look for products and
services, with a high percentage of searches on specific localities.
What about Yellow Page users? Studies conducted show that frequent
Yellow Page users are likely to be Internet subscribers and heavy
Internet users. And part of their online activities includes purchases
via the Internet that sometimes amount to $1,000. A business that
disregards online activities may do well to think again.
The
convenience of online
searching for local products and services is gaining acceptance.
However, search results are not as comprehensive as the desired
information for local businesses. Many small local businesses do not
have online presence. Searching for specific services in a given locale
is still done by referencing the yellow pages, as proven by the 13.4
billion Yellow Page references in 2006. After referencing the Yellow
Pages, some consumers then turn to the Internet to check if the company
has a website.
Who
doesn’t want a
growing customer base? You can capture both Yellow Page users and
Internet subscribers and users attention. Make online and offline
methods of advertising work together. Make sure consumers find you
whatever their method of searching is: online or offline. Cover all
your bases. Yellow Page advertising for lawyers, doctors, and other
professionals in a given locale may be effective. But having online
presence in databases will give that edge over competitors in the local
market. It increases your visibility and chances of being found by the
people who need your services.Put together search engine marketing,
local search and yellow page advertising whatever your services are,
e.g. marketing for personal injury lawyers, etc., will make you stand
out not only in your locality, but also worldwide.
B2b Yellow
Pages Online in India
What do you
thing about
this term? B2b yellow pages. In my knowledge, as the name suggest
business to business yellow pages means information of a business from
business. Means a business which gives information or we can say
address of a business. We can also think about it like a business
promoting other business. This line makes more sense instead of the
above.
These yellow
pages can be
online or offline. But today, a small amount of people go for offline
yellow pages because it is harder to find a directory of yellow pages
offline and after finding searching some thing in it. Instead it is
easier to find yellow pages online and I think it’s a single
click procedure. Yes… if you want to search yellow pages
online
you have to search only a single term i.e yellow pages with your
region, city or country whatever you want. It’s a matter of
choice.
But when b2b
yellow pages
are discussed. You have to add b2b with yellow pages with your region,
city or country as we discussed above while searching and you will
defiantly get a great listing of website providing free services to get
information of others business. You can increase your knowledge through
these websites regarding their address, city, phone numbers and
websites etc.
Now the
question arises
can we also get listed here? And the answer is a BIG YES. Obviously you
can get listed with these businesses listing for free or after paying a
very small amount. It depends upon that web site or we can say that b2b
directory. Most b2b directory which offers these yellow pages, provides
this services absolutely free whereas some directory takes a very
little amount from you side and promote your business. And here I think
paying a little amount is more beneficial instead of free because if we
take a free service then that b2b directory can remove our listing any
time
In case of
paid service,
we take a contract of one year or two and before this time our listing
can not be removed from these b2b yellow pages. This is the most
advantageous reason of this paid listing.
Yellow Pages
India is Here to Make Life Simplified
Yellow Pages
India has
become a lifeline for many of us, as we all need new and old business
to progress and churn out more money. It also helps in cutting more
time that is utilized while looking for the desired information
conventionally. Yellow pages India is an authentic business directory
on the internet today as it helps and assists in getting more business
deals. All one has to do is type the name of the organization or sector
that one needs, and voila! the details will be there at the click of
the mouse. It offers a gateway to many industries, including
entertainment, sports, information technology and as well as free
listings of various other businesses.
Yellow pages
India has
come of an age; earlier one had to flip through several pages to go
through a desired page or an industry but now with the advancement of
information technology it has become quite easier to get information on
any of the industries that one is looking for. In fact, it reduces time
as it gives you the information of related companies and industries in
just a few seconds. Yellow pages India provides timeless information on
art, music, books, photography, automotive, computers, communications,
education and healthcare sectors. These services are provided by
several companies that are working towards making things easier for the
public and in specific. With yellow pages India, lack of time will not
longer be a hindrance, rather a boon if things work out properly.
Thanks to internet and various wireless services, that one can access
these services offered by yellow pages India anywhere.
In yellow
pages India,
one can find information of all the things that one is looking for. One
just has to send in the request to the service provider through a short
code. The message will be delivered to the service provider and you can
get the information instantly. Such is the power of communication that
it does not takes more than few minutes to get access to information of
any kind about any place you want. The basic idea of all this search
service providers is to enable you to be in control of a situation,
rather then letting a situation control you. In fact, it provides
information on hotels, shops, travel agents, restaurants, cinema
complexes, hospitals, educational institutions and fitness centers.
The yellow
page service
providers have made things simple and one trust, that lack of
information about a certain thing will never be an issue. After all,
this is all so easy for you and you do not even need to make huge
efforts for this. Yellow pages India are not printed in yellow pages in
the traditional way anymore but are also provided through a click of
the mouse or punching numbers for reaching out to people easily and
effectively. Portals like yellow pages India have made life simpler and
one does not have to subscribe those heavy traditionally printed
directory anymore as one can get information at the command of a button.
Where did
the Yellow Pages Go? To
SBC yellow
page
directories have been renamed AT&T yellow pages. Talking
recently
to one of their executives; he stated that they would like to be out of
the publishing business altogether within five years. BellSouth and SBC
spent over $100 million to acquire Yellow Pages.com.
Having
talked to many of
my clients that advertise in the new AT&T Yellow Pages the all
say,
without exception, they are receiving more business today from the
Internet and then they are from the published Yellow Pages.
The savvy
advertiser
recognizes the importance of an Internet presence for local goods and
services. If your customer is looking for patio furniture, for example,
all you see in the printed Yellow Pages is a pretty picture of generic
patio furniture, the name and location of the business and a phone
number. If you go online you can visit each of the stores that are
advertising patio furniture and physically view their inventory, check
prices, and order the furniture.
The two
Internet search
engines that appeared to be dominating the market are Google Local and
Yahoo Local. Why these two sites will dominate local Yellow Pages
search is because they dominate the Internet search now. You can access
their sites with handheld wireless devices and easily find the local
business you are looking for.
The sales
reps that sell
AT&T and Verizon yellow page advertising are actively selling
Internet advertising on their own Yellow Pages.com, Google Local, and
Yahoo Local. The cost of purchasing a listing in a directory area for
one Yellow Pages heading is $59 a month. Eventually, the prime
placement at the top of the pages in headings like "Attorney" will cost
thousands of dollars.
If you are a
business
owner without a web site AT&T will build a web site for you and
place it on Google and Yahoo Local for free for a year and there is no
cost per click charge.
The print
Yellow Pages
you will still receive will come from independent publishers that cover
towns or neighborhoods. This part of the yellow page industry is
expanding at 15% a year. Ads in these books cost a fraction of what the
ads cost in a major AT&T directory.
Obviously,
we've all seen
the effectiveness of Yellow Pages drop with the advent of the Internet.
We don't need to discuss that any further; it's an indisputable fact
that people go to the Internet now more than they go to the Yellow
Pages to search for stuff. So paying for the expense of a full-page
Yellow Page ad may not be as effective as it was five years ago. In
fact, it won't be.
But there
are still some
pros to full-page ads. First of all, you can look as big as all your
competition. A very important fact about the Yellow Pages that every
business minded person should remember is that a full-page ad is a
full-page ad. How "big" you actually are doesn't really matter. Maybe
you buy the double truck ad and so you have two full-page ads to look
even bigger, but the bottom line is you can look as big as all the
competition because you can have a full-page ad that's the same size as
them. At some instances, bigger means better in the mind of the
prospects. So that can develop a sense of credibility, and, of course,
you're there when people seek you out.
Is everybody
searching
the Internet every time they go to look for something? No. Consumers
and businessmen still consult the Yellow Pages and you still have to be
there.
Putting in a
nice logo
that says "Free quote on insurance" is the absolute worst thing you can
do with your Yellow Page ad. Forgive me if i offend you or hurt your
feelings because it's the practice you've been using in the past, but
believe me, this is the right way of doing it from this day.
Remember to
make sure
your Yellow Page ads always have: a good headline, a compelling copy
that makes you look different than the competition, and a call to
action with an offer that's going to help the prospect get what they're
looking for
Also, always
give an
offer, something besides "call and get a free quote" which everybody
else is doing. You can offer a free video, a checklist, an audio CD, a
report, and an online evaluation, etc. These are the essential things
that will certainly set you apart from all the other Yellow Page ads
out there.
Again, you
should not
forget that if you are going to use a large ad, it should be a half
page or a full page ad. And if you go with a full page ad, it is
recommended that you elaborate some more with testimonials and
guarantees, etc.

How to
Promote Your Business in the Yellow Pages:
Ask the
Expert

Finley
The Expert
Our expert
on Yellow
Pages advertising is author, speaker, consultant, Barry Maher. You may
have seen Maher on the Today Show, NBC Nightly News, CNBC or in the
pages of USA Today, the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal. His
book, Filling the Glass was recently honored as “[One of] The
Seven Essential Popular Business Books” by Today’s
Librarian magazine. Few people realize that Maher is also the author of
the book, Getting the Most from Your Yellow Pages Advertising, and that
he conducts Yellow Pages workshops at conventions across the country.
According to TIME, “Barry Maher has helped thousands of small
businesses get the most cost effective Yellow Pages advertising
possible.”
Does Yellow
Pages advertising really work?
Well, it
certainly can work. But it’s far more likely to work if you
pay attention to a few key rules.
Can’t
you rely on your Yellow Pages sales rep for any help you need?
Sometimes
the rep can be
part of the problem. Too many Yellow Page ads are whipped up in the few
minutes the rep has left after trying to sell you a bigger ad. Ask, no,
insist, that your directory publishers develop an ad for you that
justifies the cost. If they can't, have the ad produced yourself.
Okay, so you
need a great looking ad. What about the content?
Content is
another key.
The first piece of ad copy that readers see, the headline, has to be
powerful enough to drag them away from all those competing ads. Never
use your company name as your headline unless it really is that
powerful. Unless it really is the most important selling copy in the ad.
What other
copy should you include?
You have to
include all
the hard, factual information potential customers need to make a
decision to call or drop by: be it about image, market niche, products
and services, features, brand names, expertise, pricing, quality,
hours, reliability, speed, location, service area, credit available,
whatever it might be.
So you
should use every bit of ad space you’re paying for?
Absolutely
not. Your ad
is competing for readability with every other ad under your heading or
headings. If it’s difficult to read, it isn't going to be
read.
You've got to refine your copy until you can provide all the
information potential clients want in an ad that's so uncluttered and
inviting that reading it becomes automatic.
What about
visuals, like drawings and photos?
Nothing can
turn a
mediocre Yellow Pages ad into a great one faster than the right
illustration. If your picture isn't worth a thousand words, find one
that is.
How about ad
size: is bigger better?
Unfortunately,
all things
being equal, bigger ads get a greater response. They also get the best
placement, closest to the front of the heading. Placement can be even
more important than size.
A visually
appealing ad
can make up for some size, especially under a heading where all the ads
are on the same page or two. It's much more difficult to compete with
ads on an earlier page. That page may never be turned.
Always
consider placement
when you're deciding on ad size. Have your sales rep show you where the
size you're considering would fall in this year's directory. That
should give you an idea of the position, relative to the competition,
you'd have next year. Sometimes going up a size and spending just a few
more dollars will move you much closer to the front of the heading.
Sometimes you can cut back in size without losing much in the way of
position.
What about
using color?
Color is eye
catching.
And expensive. If the money you’d be spending is
approximately
the same, you’re better off significantly improving the size
and
placement of your ad than the color.
Some areas
are covered by several competing directories. Should you buy ads in all
of them?
Make the
sales rep prove
value before you buy, especially when you're considering a directory
for the first time. If he or she can't prove value, don't put any real
money there. Instead, try something small: perhaps even a simple
in-column ad, or even just a listing. Track your response, survey your
customers to discover how they discovered you. Then next year you'll
have know.
What’s
the biggest Yellow Pages mistake you’ve ever encountered?
That’s
got to be
the attorney who found herself listed not under ATTORNEYS but under
REPTILES. I’ll leave it to you to decide if that was perhaps
more
truth in advertising than she bargained for.
Which
reminds me: Always insist on getting a proof for your display ad.
raigslist,
Yellow Pages, or Web Directory List?
Phone books
can now be
called a thing of the past. Well, there was that one time when my
husband left the toilet paper roll on the floor, directly underneath
the waiting empty roll, for the 72nd time in a row. But for its actual
purpose of providing information to me, I cannot remember when I last
used it. In this day and age my computer is always so much closer than
the phone book, although it cannot be denied, it is much harder to
throw across a room when frustrated. But yet I keep the thing around,
try to cloak the unsightly machine with my decor or what have you. I
have to keep it out and in plain sight for the whole world to concede
that yes; I have a phonebook available for your information pleasure.
Heaven forbid I lose another useless monstrosity. Right, because
something that is 6 inches thick and could be injurious when thrown
appropriately could be lost easily. But seriously, do you think I know
where it is? No, because I never use it. Just about anything that I
need from it can be found on the Internet. The people that want to be
found will be in the phone book, but I can look them up online as well.
And if they don't want to be found, well, I am not going to find them
in either place. But every year, Bell reliably drops one off at the end
of my driveway, and within minutes, it ends up - somewhere - just in
case I have an immediate phone number emergency where 911 does not
apply (I have that one memorized, anyway).
Gone are the
days of
letting our fingers do the walking through the Yellow Pages. In fact,
even the Yellow Pages are on the web as well. The Yellow Pages can't be
knocked; they still remain one of the most useful information services
out there. When looking for local information on businesses or
services, it is my preferred information provider. But I don't raise
the level of my strength training program by flipping through hard copy
information. I log on. In fact, it is faster for me to learn more about
my pizza place on the Internet than to find the phone number in the
book. Now with sites out there like Craigslist or web directory sites,
I have several alternatives available to me within seconds if I need
information. Craigslist and web directories operate very similarly to
the Yellow Pages, with a few extras. Craigslist is primarily a
classified ad site, but it can give a whole lot of useful information.
Not only can I find local business information, but can also look for
housing (which will come in handy for my husband if he attempts the
toilet roll conundrum one more time), look for work, social activities,
and a whole gamut of community classifieds information. What makes it
even better is that I will not be inundated with ads while I am doing
so, as I am in so many other places on the Internet.
In fact,
Craigslist is so
easy to use, and now, quite the rage, having over 15 million users a
month, that even my online Yellow Pages are becoming has-beens. The
information on Craigslist is also current information, which is not
always the case with the Yellow Pages, online or otherwise. And now,
with eBay controlling some of its shares, it is holding its own even in
the company of bigger sites like Google and Yahoo. Clearly, the
providing of local information is on its way to become the exclusive
function of websites
.
Do You Need
Help Designing A Better Yellow Page Ad?
If you own a
local small
business effective yellow page advertising is nearly a must.
But
for small business owners who almost always have small advertising
budgets every dollar really counts. And just how many of us actually
know how to design an ad let alone an effective ad? Well I'm gonna give
you a few tips on doing just that.
For starters
I want you
to know you can do it yourself but if you need to you can hire a
professional to do it for you. Just remember that's going to cost you
also.
So where do
you start?
First off you need to contact your local phone book and set up a
meeting with an advertising rep. Now remember the rep can offer you
some decent advice on how to design an ad but they've still got a job
to do which is sell ad space. They really don't care what you're ad
looks like. To be fair I have had ad reps that did seem to give a hoot
about my ad but I've had the reverse too!
Now before
you meet with
them you need to get an idea of what your budget is going to be. Your
comittment to the ad will have to be anywhere from six months to one
year depending on how often the book is reprinted. You'll be asked to
make your payments monthly but the ad will also need to be submitted
about four months in advance to allow for changes to the proof.
When it
comes to
designing the ad and what the ad will cost there are two main
considerations. Number one is the size of the ad. The bigger the more
expensive it is. Second is if the ad is in color or not. They don't
really care about pictures or how many words you use when it comes to
pricing. It's size and color.
Size and
color I've found
really go hand in hand. If you want an ad that stands out you either
need to be the biggest in your category or be the sharpest looking.
I've always opted for the sharpest. Personal experience has taught me
that being the biggest is not always best. Mainly because they're dull
looking. They blend in to much with the book itself.
So I highly
recommend a
color ad. And when your picking colors try to develop some rythm to it.
Say if you have a website or color business cards try to stick to the
same scheme. If you don't have one now's the time to create one.
Next you
need an image.
You want an image that tells people something about your business. One
image I used to use featured our store front. And remember an image can
act as a background as ours did or it can be a focus point of the ad.
The point is that you need to grab their attention remember you're just
one of many so you need to stand out.
Once you've
got your
size, image and colors figured out then you need a headline. You need
something appealing to them but make sure you're not copycating someone
else. People don't want to see multiple ads saying they're the fastest.
So you need to pay attention to what others are saying and say
something new and powerful. You want your ad to speak to people.
As far as
the actual text
of the ad is concerned it needs to tell readers something about your
company. You need the usual address and phone. If you have a web site
make sure you list it. Also if you're a member of the Chamber of
Commerce or Better Business Bureau mention it. If you take credit cards
make sure to include those symbols too. Opinions vary on how to lay
these things out but one thing I've seen that seems universal is don't
clutter it up. Space things out as much as possible. People don't
really want to read ads they just want to find a provider for their
needs.
So tell them
what you do
and make it easy to contact you. Your telephone number should be
prominent and the website address as well. Also remember a phone book
is not a magazine. Don't try to get to cute with the ad. Remember your
just trying to get their attention!
My last tip
in designing
an ad is flip through your yellow pages. Pick a subject and see what
catches your eye under that heading and others. You'll probably be able
to figure out who is wasting their money and who isn't.
Yellow page
ads can earn
a healthy return on your investment but you have to put in the work so
take it seriously and you might actually wind up having some fun with
it in the process.
15 Sure-fire
Yellow Page Headlines Guaranteed to Get Attention
I've been
advising and
counseling businesses on their Yellow Page advertising since 1976.
During that period, I've placed ads in every media imaginable and
consulted to over 7000 businesses. With those credentials, I feel
capable and confident in recommending the easiest way to achieve a more
successful marketing program. Whether it's a newspaper, magazine,
Yellow Page ad, or direct mailer, the headline is always king. It not
only is the first thing seen, it sets the tone for the entire promotion
that follows. Yet creating one, is the critical procedure that's often
overlooked. I've seen the typical "Tire Experts," or the "Low-Cost
Leaders," enough to fall soundly asleep. Every business assumes they
have the best service or products at the best prices. If that is the
case, then why shop and compare at all? After all, logic says that any
company can provide the best item at the lowest cost. If all consumers
are only concerned with these two issues, then why ever discuss
anything else? But we know that this supposition is wrong. Marketing
focus groups have proven that buyers are also interested in guarantees,
longevity, brand names, style, fashion, convenience, ease-of-use,
prompt and courteous service, and a multitude of other factors.
Therefore, why not tap into their actual needs and wants? That is the
primary responsibility of a business anyway; to fill a need. Of course,
one can also create a need where one didn't exist before. For instance,
a pest control company may tout their, "environmental-friendly"
chemical, hinting that the other guys are poisoning everything they
touch. Or a dentist might discuss their "pain-less" drills, versus the
cruel, jaw crunchers, that the other dentists utilize. The headline
should capture the imagination and giver one pause to consider the
message that is making the business unique in the industry. But you're
not a copywriter or ad man, so what can you do? Well, you could start
with these headlines that follow as a jumping-off point and examples of
what might work in various situations. Each is designed to get
attention and a reaction. The words in parenthesis are the sub text
with an explanation. "The 5 Things to Know Before You Call a Plumber"
"An Advanced Dental Treatment You're Probably Never Heard Of" "Don't
Repair Your Transmission Until You Read This" "There's A Time-Bomb in
Your Garage! Learn more..." (for auto repair, etc.) "Take This
Carpet-Cleaning Quiz Before You Call Anyone" "Can Traditional Pest
Control Hurt More Than Help?"(using harsh chemicals, etc.) "Not All
Tires Are Made Equal. Ask Us Why." "Why You Really Don't Need
Insurance. (it's for the survivors) "How Can You Tell When Flowers are
Really Fresh?" "What Painting Contractors Don't Want You to Know" "We
Charge the Highest Prices in Town & That's Good News"(better
service, etc.) "Why Your Inside Air is Probably Making You Sick"(a/c or
duct cleaning, etc.) "3 Ways a Mover Can Rip You Off" "Secrets to
Selling Your Home and Paying a Lower Commission" "We No Longer Sell
Burglar Alarms" (we sell safety, piece of mind, etc.) Just plug in your
own industry or service on the list above and see what happens. Did you
notice a single word about quality or low price? It just goes to show
that a simple, creative approach can do wonders. Try brainstorming with
your family, friends, or business associates. You'll be amazed at what
you can uncover. Did I mention that I also have the secrets to what
happens behind the scenes "Inside the Yellow Pages"? Now there's
another great headline!
Online
Search Vs Yellow Pages Advertising by Former Yellow Page Account Rep
I worked in
the Yellow
Pages industry for over 9 years as an account manager for the two top
yellow page publishers in this country. It was unbelievable to me how
much business owners would spend on a product that they could only
change their message on once a year? Plus, they were paying for an ad
that would be bunched in with all of their competitors?
This was
mind-boggling to
me. What would you say if I told you that you could save thousands of
dollars and have an extremely powerful web site and online marketing
presence that would generate new pre-qualified customers to your web
site and business through your front doors? They did receive some
results but could the thousands of dollars spent every month be
generating them more new customers in a different media. The answer was
YES and is still YES!
Since I left
the yellow
page industry a few years ago and started my own Intnernet Marketing
Company. I love to sit down with current business owners that
are
wasting their hard earned money on yellow page advertising and show
them how I can save them thousands of dollars and generate them more
new customers!
First of
all, my name is
Chris Thomas and I am the President of Web Traffic Partners. After
going to endless SEO (search engine optimization) and internet
marketing seminars and training with some of the best online marketing
minds in the country I can call myself an Internet marketing and SEO
expert. Don't believe me? I'll prove it to you with my proven
results! A brief synopsis of my company is this: In a nutshell, I
create unique, online marketing campaigns & web sites that are
search engine optimized and that make money for my clients. It really
is as simple as that!
We'll get
back to that in
a minute. There are a lot of facts that people have to know when
looking at the differences between Search Engine Marketing and Yellow
Pages. Here are just a few major differences:
•
Yellow Pages are
difficult to track and have limited tracking options. Online marketing
offers extensive tracking options.
•
Yellow Pages reach
can only go so far and if you advertise in more than one directory it
can get very expensive. Online marketing has an unlimited reach and is
very cost effective.
•
You can only
change your advertising message on a yearly basis with Yellow Pages.
You can change your message online at any time.
•
There are over 13
billion searches on the web/month and growing. Yellow Pages receive an
approximate 1 billion references/month and is losing more and more
customers that advertise in the Yellow Pages every year.
These are
some pretty powerful facts, right? Read below to see what this current
client said in his testimonial...
"Thank you
for providing
our practice with what has been unquestionably the most effective
advertising campaign we have to date. Actually, at this point I'll
probably downgrade my yellow pages presence next year since we have
tracked nearly no new patient traffic from that media recently. I think
most everyone uses the internet now for research on these types of
services."
Don't
believe me? Call me and I will show you the testimonial myself!
Anyway here
are a few more of my PROVEN results:
* The second
month that
this Lansing MI Company’s new web site was visible on the
search
engines it had over 1,500 UNIQUE VISITORS! That was up over 800% from
what they were receiving before I re-designed their site, re-optimized
it and created & executed their unbelievable online marketing
campaign! Did you hear me? Over 800% increase in unique traffic from
their previous website!
* Within two
months a
Grand Rapids MI dental office was receiving 10-15 new patients/month
directly from the result of their new web site and online marketing
campaign that I created and executed!
* After the
first four
months of making this Lansing web site live and implementing my online
marketing campaign, it generated over 5,000 new, unique visitors!
I’ll prove it to you!
* I took a
current
Lansing client from no keyword related first page Google rankings to
over 50 first page rankings in the first month!

In Yellow Pages
Some people
believe that
yellow pages do not receive response like other advertising methods do
and this is true to some extent but not in totality. When talking about
traditional yellow pages, there sure is a decline in number of people
opting for advertising in it. According to a recent report, even the
most attractive advertisement in a particular section is not getting
the response from callers like they used to get before. On the
contrary, the prices of placing ads in directories are on a rise, which
speaks a different, story altogether.
In reality
different
categories are witnessing different rates of decline. Like the lawyers
category is seeing the maximum decline, whereas emergency service
providers section has the same call rate. And sections like mobile
phones, real estate and furniture are seeing a rise due to the
increasing customer demand. Altering the size of the advertisement or
changing the look cannot do wonders any more.
Experts
suggest that
relying on yellow pages to get customers isn't enough. Other options
should be considered as well along with it. With the Internet reaching
every home, nearly half of the Internet users use the net everyday.
They prefer to buy stuff online, from the comfort of their homes.
Research should be done on the Internet to get reviews about the
product. People, who don't usually shop online, also are also opting to
shop online as information is provided at the click of a mouse. It is
easier for people to trust as customers who used the product give their
feedback about the product after using it.
A relatively
newer
concept is the yellow pages going online. The good thing about them is
that they are updated frequently unlike the printed directories and can
be viewed from any part of the world. According to researches
conducted, the response increased by twenty five percent every year. So
those who are interested to invest in yellow pages advertising can
think of going online. Directories are submitted to search engines,
which on typing a keyword or phrase bring the results. Small and local
businesses, too, can land on the pages brought by the result. The cost
of creating a website can be saved if all the relevant information
about the company is included in the online yellow pages. Look out for
the date to renew the directory listing, and if there is a need to
change the advertisement, it is not a big problem on online yellow
pages. Some starter websites offer to place advertisement in their
yellow pages for free. Search out for such websites on the Internet.
Larger
businesses can
start their own websites and place links in the online yellow pages.
Articles can be framed about the business and can be submitted to
Ezines and websites related to the area of business. Some websites also
allow posting articles for free. The purpose of the yellow pages is
basically to get potential customers but that doesn't mean that
existing customers should be neglected. Steps should be taken to
strengthen the relationship with them and to retain their trust by
maintaining the standard of the products supplied to them. Once they
are completely satisfied, the price-rise won't bother them and they
will talk about the company to people they know, which will fetch new
customers.
The
objective is to work
smartly and select the right method of advertising. If a business isn't
using any other method for advertising apart from using yellow pages,
it can cause problems and the products may not sell. Analyze how much
money is spent on placing ads in directories and estimate whether the
amount of customers the business gets is desirable. Whenever a call is
received from a potential customer, ask them how they got to know about
the enterprise. This will help to analyze which advertising method is
ideal for the business. It is never late to correct the mistake and go
for the right method.

Is Local
Search Online or Print Yellow Pages Being Used More?
Search
engines have
become the first choice used for local search plus getting listed on
Google and Yahoo for local search is free. TMP Directional Marketing
(TMPDM) recently released the results of their 2nd annual<a

Local Search Usage Study</a>. For the first time,
according to
the study, the first source used for local search are Search
Engines with 31% of users but right behind it at 30% are the print
Yellow Pages or White Pages. Last year’s study ranked print
yellow pages first with 33% of users followed by Search Engines at 30%
of users. The number of people using local search over the yellow pages
will continue to increase. To me, it should increase for no
other
reason than to save trees. It’s ridiculous, particularly in
large
cities with huge directories, the number of trees that are cut to
produce the paper for these directories.
Eighty six
per cent of
respondents said they have a print directory in their home. I must
admit it is hard to imagine not having the yellow pages
isn’t it? I have one right behind my computer monitor but I
still
go to local search on Google first. Habit or laziness call it what you
will but I usually only resort to the print yellow pages when I
can’t find it online.
For small
businesses
continuing to advertise in the yellow pages is a big decision. It is
very expensive and doesn’t provide the metrics that online
advertising provides to determine if it is working. It makes it really
important to track calls to see how people are finding your business.
Doing this can help you best determine your advertising choices next
year.
All
businesses with a
local presence should put their listing in Google Local Business
Center and Yahoo! Local. They can really generate a
lot of
leads for your business free of charge. The Google Local Business
Center allows you to list your business on Google local/Google maps for
free. Google Local also pulls results from Verizon Superpages and other
trusted sources. If you are a service business working from home you
can use a P.O. Box located at the center of the area you want to market
to for your listing. You can also use Google Adwords to buy local ads
on Google Maps. <a rel="nofollow"

href=” http://listings.local.yahoo.com/
“>Yahoo!
Local</a> offers basic listings that are free. You need a
physical address to list your business in Yahoo! Local however.
How Much
Should you Spend On your Yellow Page Advertising Budget?
When it
comes time set up a budget for your advertising, I have a simple rule
of thumb: whatever it takes.
Okay, maybe
I'm being a
bit flippant, but after three decades in advertising that's almost the
best I can do. I could give you the standard answer that most marketing
textbooks offer. An average business should allocate about between two
to five percent of your gross revenue. A startup or new business might
have to do double that the first year or two. Let me amend those
figures and walk you through a few companies that don't meet these
numbers.
During the
heyday of AT
& T, they only spent about one percent of their income on
advertising. But, in the sixties and seventies, they were making a
billion and a half dollars annually. So their advertising budget was
$150,000,000 a year. That's still a staggering amount. I read somewhere
that many major companies spend about twenty percent of their
anticipated gross, during a campaign to introduce a new product into
the marketplace. Here are some other industries and their allotted
percentages as expressed in very general terms according to some
current advertising journals' statistics:
Auto
Manufacturers: Up to
1%, Retail Stores: 2% to 3%, Service Businesses: 3% to 5%, New Business
Startup: 5% to 7%, Fast Moving Consumer Products: 8% to 10%,
Pharmaceutical or Cosmetic Companies: 20% and up.
But suppose
you're not
Revlon Cosmetics and, instead, your business is cleaning carpets: so
where do you fit in? It depends. It's all about the mystical, magical
ROI, once again. If you're the new guy in town, odds are you will need
to do the most advertising to establish your name and identity among
the other carpet cleaners. Unfortunately, it means the outlay of
sizeable marketing dollars to compete with existing ads. They, after
all, have already earned their place by their longevity. You have to
break into the heading with a large ad to draw customers that
ordinarily would migrate to the older competitors.
And it
probably couldn't
have come at a worse time for you. You've just invested in trucks,
equipment, perhaps an office and that overhead, employees, insurance,
signage, accounting and licensing fees. It's outflow without any
inflow. Yet now you are expected to cough up even more money for a
marketing campaign. It's just about this time that many new businesses
say they're tapped out and opt to bypass the Yellow Pages. It's just
too darned expensive, they moan. But, a smart businessperson would have
allowed for this expensive in the original business plan. You do have a
business plan, right? You don't? Shame on you!
Assuming you
have some
basic strategy for your business, then you should have an advertising
allotment. It's as important as a sign on the front of the building or
on the truck. It would include those items plus any direct mail, Yellow
Pages and any other appropriate media. If you're a retail business, try
the two to five percent of anticipated gross sales. If you're a service
provider, go with four to ten percent. Then double that for the first
year.
This is a
general rule of
thumb. There are so many factors that affect the outcome of a campaign,
I hesitate to set down a firm number. What if you use a figure I
mention for a year and have a miserable result? Did you over or under
spend? How do you know? I will bet that most business failures are due
to a lack of an, or under-funded, advertising program. I remember how
many of my customers cut back their campaigns during recessionary
times. This is exactly the reverse of how large corporations view a
downturn in sales. They realize that they must increase their marketing
in hard times. It may be counter- intuitive to a small business to
spend more when profits are down, but it's the same as playing the
stock market.
When a stock
is soaring,
do you buy when it's peaked or when it starts dropping? Most amateur
investors will jump on the bandwagon of a climbing stock, thereby
forfeiting almost any chance of a profit. The smart investor will buy
the so-called, "bottom-feeders" because they are the best potential
profit-makers and have the lowest cost factors. Again, the
counter-intuitive approach works every time. When determining a budget,
a change in mindset is in order. Rather than looking at advertising as
an expense, consider it as an investment. Many businesses think of
marketing as an overhead expense. That may be true of your insurance,
rent, utilities, employees, accountant and legal fees, but advertising
is the only service that can actually bring in customers. None of the
other aforementioned items can make a sale. With the exception of a
commissioned salesperson, the remainder of these overhead expenses are
always outgoing only. So you have to reevaluate your advertising
strategy viewing it in the proper light: an investment that helps
provide cash-flow.
After many
years of YP
consulting, one thing stood out above all others. The idea that a
business's ad was a necessary evil which drained the company of profits
and was quite over-priced. I never heard a customer remark how cheap
his YP ad appeared to be and how happy he was to write that monthly
directory check. Even when times were good and they knew the ad was
getting them calls, the expense was painful. What would be even more
painful would be to close a business due to a lack of sales.
I used to
compare a YP ad
to a business sign. Most retail stores recognized the need for letting
the public know that ABC Auto Sales was open for business and spent
huge amounts on massive signs around the property. But, when it came to
their YP program, their invariably asked what the smallest ad would
cost. I would say that perhaps they might consider reducing their
signage to a tiny, one by one foot size. Of course, that would cause
them to become indignant. The whole idea was laughable to them and why
should they even consider such a stupid suggestion? The poor owners
didn't make the obvious connection.
So they
would budget for
a neon-illuminated monstrosity that would put a Vegas casino to shame
and yet have a pittance remaining for the directory. When I explained
how few people drove around town looking for the Auto Sales sign, they
would justify the investment by saying how many customers came in
because they said they saw the sign. I was happy for them but pointed
out that placing a sign in front of every person actually seeking out a
business would be an even better investment. Where could they do that,
they wondered. Hmm. How about under the heading of
"Automobiles-Dealers" in the Yellow Pages? Sure, they would have to
forgo the flashing lights, but think of all the electricity they could
save.
My
long-winded treatise
is to convey one hypothesis: have a plan. Cover all the essential areas
of the business. Even if you decide that the directory is not your
ideal form of promotion, make sure that your advertising program is
well funded and part of the overall business scheme. Also, have a
multi-year strategy that allows for future growth and marketing, unless
you have figured you'll be closing within the first year or so. In that
case, save your money and go on a nice vacation instead. After all, a
company that "fails to plan, plans to fail," or so it's been said.
